Is It Summer Yet?

Mother Nature loves to tease us this time of year . . . . . giving us brief glimmers of hope, that spring is near. Then a reminder that, no . . . . we still have some chilly days to endure before we can begin celebrating those Summer days at Okoboji.

A Summer Storm to Remember

The strong thunderstorm that hit the Lakes Area Saturday evening at around 10:30pm caused some major damage. The biggest casualty seems to be trees - literally hundreds have been uprooted or mangled.

Driving along Lakeshore Drive this morning, heading north along the Lake, it looked almost like a war zone. Trees down, branches everywhere, power lines damaged, roads closed, and the buzz of chain saws filled the air.

The areas that seemed to incur the worst damage were the north end of West Lake - Haywards Bay, Fairoaks Beach, Pike's Point, Brownell heights, Monarch Cove, North Bay, Triboji Beach, Raebel's Beach, The Landings neighborhood, and then the south end of the Lake along Terrace Park.

By midday major progress was already being made on clearing trees and debris, as well as power line repairs.

The Ritz summed it up pretty well.

Eagles near Myerly Point

One of the highlights this month was having the opportunity to see the huge eagle's nest over near Myerly Point. Having lived in Alaska for a year, seeing eagles was a fairly common sight, especially near areas where the salmon would run each year. So, the rare sight of an eagle in the Iowa Great Lakes is pretty special. But having a nesting pair of eagles and their eaglet residing in the area is really something to appreciate.
